2018 North America Student Symposium

This year the 2018 North America Student Symposium (NASS) will be held in Baton Rouge at Louisiana State University (LSU) from Feb. 21-24, 2018. We are planning to take a group of about 20 to 25 students.

SPE PSU will cover hotel and registration costs. We also plan on covering a portion of the airfare costs. We will all be taking the same flight and instead of carpooling to the airport (whether it be PIT, PHL or IAD), we are looking at possibilities to transport in a bus.

NASS is the largest SPE student planned conference in North America and is the 2nd largest gathering of SPE students across the country. The purpose of the Symposium is to:

  • provide opportunities for students to increase both their technical and soft-skills. There will be a Career Fair this year;
  • learn about different aspects of the oil and gas industry from industry professionals;
    host the PetroBowl and SPE Paper Contest;
  • and most importantly, provide a relaxed environment for students to network with their peers from across the US, Canada, and Mexico.

The theme for this year is “Big Data” and will focus on the growing use of technology in the oil and gas industry.

We are taking a pool to see what y’all would want at the symposium: what to do you want to see at NASS, what type of presentations/ topics would you like to hear about, and if you have any contacts in the industry that might want to speak at the event.  Please contact me at with any ideas or speakers you may have for NASS!

This is a great opportunity to show the rest of North America what Penn State has to offer, and it would look great on your resume.

We are currently looking for corporate sponsors for NASS, too.  If you know someone in oil and gas that would be interested in sponsoring, please check out the following link:

The deadline to fill out the form is Wednesday, November 1st.  Selections will be made shortly after.
